2012 is the year of exorcism movies. The Devil Inside opened up the first weekend in 2012 with $34.5 million in ticket sales. The Last Exorcism 2 is in post-production, so we can expect a release date in 2012 or 2013. The Possession is on tap to be released in movie theaters August 31, 2012. Exorcism movies are making another comeback.
We no longer have to wait every few years to watch a good exorcist movie. The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Last Exorcism, The Rite, and The Devil Inside are the only mainstream exorcism movies to reach theaters in the previous seven years. Exorcism movies are popular among horror movies fans, but the best exorcist movies were made in the 70s.
When you think about it, there are not too many exorcism movies. We prepared a list of the top 10 highest grossing exorcism movies in box office history. Beyond the top 10 exorcism movies, the rest are sub-par productions which went straight to video and or DVD. If you are a screenwriter, definitely enter the exorcism sub-genre space to get your screenplay optioned.
The Devil Inside, The Possession, and maybe The Last Exorcism 2 will take possession of the 2012 exorcism movies list. In the next few years, Exorcism Diaries and The Exorcism Diaries are scheduled to be released. We're glad to see two unique movie titles! There shouldn't be any confusion in the two movie productions.
