The Possession movie opens with an old woman trying to ignore the Dibbuk box. She refuses to open the box. Therefore, she plays music to drown out the voices coming from the box. Unwilling to open the box, the old woman attempts to smash the box with a hammer. The evil spirit inside the box violently throws the woman around the living room. She dies.
Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) coaches the college basketball team. He is a divorced father with two young daughters. His ex-wife Stephanie (Kyra Sedgwick) wait as Clyde takes their daughters out for the weekend.
Clyde and his daughters stop at a yard sale. This is the same home that opens the movie. The son is selling his deceased mother's possessions, including the Dibbuck box.
Emily requests her father to buy the mystery box. Em opens the demon box on that very night. She puts the ring on her finger. She discovers a moth, a figurine, and an old tooth. Em begins to act strangely, telling her sister Hannah that she is not herself.
Em eats her pancakes too fast. Her father says to slow down. She then stabs him his hand with the fork. A male student steals Em's bag. She beats the pulp out of the student.
The teacher attempts to stop Em, but struggles to hold back the violent, possessed young girl. Em is seen looking at the mirror within the box. Her face looks distorted, almost as the demon spirit.
Moths smother Emily's entire room. She is removed from the room. The Dibbuk box kills the teacher.
Clyde gets rid of the box.
Emily stages an argument, making the father seem as if he is slapping her around. The young sister watches, thinking her father is abusing Em. Em runs out of the house. She is drawn to the box. Clyde runs around the street, searching for his daughter. The demon spirit tells Em to do something to her dad. Em refuses to harm her father. This demon completely enters Em. Several moths fly inside Em's mouth.
The father takes the box to a college professor. He tells Clyde the Dibbuk box contains a malicious or malevolent spirit. The scripts are of Hebrew descent.
Clyde reads a Jewish or Hebrew Bible. The possessed Em uses telepathy to move the Bible out of her father's hands. This confirms to suspicion that his daughter is possessed.
At home, Em begins to raid the refrigerator. Her mother finds her acting strange. She had raw meat in her mouth. We see her making the transformation into a demon. Glass revealed the demon entity. The mother steps on broken glass. She is afraid of her daughter. Em comes to her senses right before attempting to kill her mother.
Em attacks the mother's boyfriend using the demon's inner powers. She begins breaking out the dentist's teeth with her mind. The wind blows. She looks spooky and demented. The boyfriend jumps into his car and leaves in a hurry. Em has convulsions on the grass.
Clyde pleads for the Jewish group to help save his daughter. He cries. They are afraid of this Dibbuk box. The Jewish group move away from the box, wanting nothing to do with the evil. The older Jewish man tells Clyde that he must rely on the will of God.
While Em is undergoing an MRI, the mother sees an evil entity inside her daughter. The lights flicker. Thus, we see the female demon spirit remain inside Em’s chest and abdominal cavity.
Tzadok (Matisyahu) agrees to help Clyde rescue his daughter from the demon spirit. The evil spirit sends off a disturbing vibe to warn Tzaboth.
Tazaboth requests a private room to perform the Jewish exorcism. He asks the family members to place a possession of theirs inside the box. Hannah cuts off a piece of her hair. Clyde places his necklace with his wedding ring on it into the box. Stephanie adds a personal artifact to the box (can't quite remember).
The Jewish exorcist performs the exorcism in the physical therapy room located upstairs. The water rises upward like a tsunami. Em goes wild. Her demon side is seen. Em's face transforms, her eyes and face turning evil. She jumps on the exorcist, choking the air out of him.
Em escapes the room. Clyde searches the hospital for his daughter. In the morgue, dead bodies remain still on gurneys. Em keeps repeating the same verse to her father, and then changes her tone to the evil female spirit. Em jumps on her father's back.
Tzadok, sister, and the mom find Clyde and Emily in another room. The exorcist feels the atmosphere is wrong. It is too peaceful. He reads the exorcism prayer.
Clyde’s leg has the same odd limp as Emily’s leg during the pancake scene. The evil female spirit is revealed to have jumped into Clyde's body. The exorcist performs an exorcism again. The demon begins to crawl out of Clyde's mouth.
The demon moves back into the box. The ring falls on the ground. Tzadok places a white cloth on the box.
Clyde, Stephanie, Emily and Hannah become a family again.
Tzadok calls Clyde. They have a quick conversation. He wants to return his BMW. All of a sudden, a truck smashes the car into pieces. Bystanders attempt to locate any people involved in the accident. The box is projected on the side of the road. It begins to speak with chants and whispers from the distance.
Apparently, The Possession twist ending is that Tzadok failed to put all possessions back into the box (the ring). As a result, the demon box kills him.
