The Devil Inside movie trick: Why moviegoers believe The Devil Inside movie is a real documentary?

The Devil Inside movie opens with what is deemed as the real Maria Rossi 1989 murders committed in Hartford, Connecticut. Maria Rossi underwent an exorcism to exorcise the demons from within her. Moviegoers want to know the real truth about the Devil Inside movie. What facts are real and which are fake? Why do moviegoers believe The Devil Inside movie is a factual documentary about exorcisms and multiple demonic possession?

The Devil Inside writer/director and co-writer trick moviegoers into believing the exorcism movie is a real documentary to discover the truth. The movie opens with a good setup; the 911 emergency call and the murder footage to show the brutally battered bodies. The possessed Maria Rossi probably went off the deep end while under the control of four demon spirits.

Next, Isabella Rossi decides to do a documentary on her mother to investigate the 1989 murders and the source behind her mother's murder spree on three church servants (two priests and one nun). It is later learned that these church servants performed the exorcism of Maria Rossi to exorcise the demons. Maria Rossi is apparently suffering from multiple demonic possession twenty years after the 1989 murders.

Moviegoers believe The Devil Inside movie is real because the filmmakers trick them with footage made to appear real. They show reporters covering the tragic murder event. Moreover, the police officers conduct a walkthrough in the Rossi home to detail the brutal slaying of the three church servants.

The Centrino Hospital for the criminally insane is a real life hospital in Rome, Italy. The Exorcism School at the Vatican is an actual exorcist preparation. For the most part, moviegoers see the inside of the Exorcism School and watch a staged lecture with two actors playing exorcists/priests.

It is easy to build a connection with the movie audience. Thus, the filmmakers humanize the characters through conveying the exorcism, murders, and the multiple demonic possession events in a documentary filmmaking style. The Blair Witch Project and the recent The Last Exorcism movie choose the documentary to perfectly execute an dramatization of so-called real events.

The Devil Inside is a fake exorcism movie. There is no Rossi murder case in Hartford, Connecticut in 1989. We can only locate one Maria Rossi murder, a 17 year old girl from the U.K. who along with Christina Molloy murdered an elderly woman, Edna Phillips, in the local neighborhood. According to McCarthy (2010) of the Guardian, there are less than 14 exorcists in the United States capable of performing exorcisms on any of the 68 million Catholics. The late Pope John Paul II issued a letter to all Bishops in the United States, urging them to designate one exorcist per Bishop.

These real facts prove the 1989 Maria Rossi murders are staged events to hype up the exorcism movie. The Devil Inside is not a real documentary. Why? The main cast are actors who played in previous movies. We can identify the exorcism movie as real when the main crew has no previous experience. It would make a great movie to watch a real exorcism. A true exorcism is unlikely to be shown in real-time.

Moviegoers assume The Devil Inside movie is a real documentary due to skewed movie facts joined together with real landmarks (Exorcism School and Centrino). The Devil Inside movie conveys fact and movie fiction. People are known to become possessed. The exorcism of Anneliese Michel is a real life exorcism case. The  exorcism story is very real. It is claimed that Anneliese experienced multiple demonic possession  (15+ demonic spirits, including the Devil). Watch The Exorcism of Emily Rose to see true accounts of the Anneliese Michel exorcism story.

The Devil Inside movie is a staged documentary to feed the demand for mainstream horror movies with exorcism sub-genres. Exorcism movies are popular since Hollywood rarely releases the movies. There are less than twenty commercial exorcism movies available in the horror movie vault. We can locate straight to video exorcism movies, but the top exorcism movies are uncommon.

The Devil Inside, The Last Exorcism, and the Rite are the only exorcism movies released into movie theaters since The Exorcism of Emily Rose in 2005. When we consider The Unborn as an exorcism movie due to the possession and last exorcism performed in the resolution. Most of these exorcism movies take the traditional moviemaking route. The Devil Inside caters to the demand for reality, which is a popular medium that controls television. In essence, The Devil Inside movie incorporated partial truth to make a fiction movie about a fake exorcism and murder.
